Celebrating Inclusivity: How Gigi's Playhouse, Esteamed, Moon Angel Sweets, and Howdy Ice Cream Lead the Way in Cary

Four local businesses exemplify a strong commitment to the community, demonstrating how inclusivity can enrich both their workplaces and the community at large. Gigi's Playhouse, Esteamed, Moon Angel Sweets, Howdy Homemade Ice Cream, and the Town of Cary are making strides in creating welcoming environments and providing opportunities for all. Here’s how each of these businesses is contributing to a more inclusive Cary.

Gigi’s Playhouse

Gigi’s Playhouse is a non-profit organization dedicated to providing educational and therapeutic programs for individuals with Down syndrome. All programs at Gigi’s Playhouse are free of charge. 

Gigi’s Playhouse started in 2006 and there are currently over 40 locations nationwide and in Mexico. Their Cary location opened in 2016 and has made a tremendous impact on the local community. 

At Gigi’s Playhouse, inclusivity is at the core of everything they do. The center’s programs are designed to cater to the diverse needs of individuals with Down syndrome, offering tailored support and encouragement. By providing a safe and supportive environment, Gigi’s Playhouse ensures that every participant has the opportunity to reach their full potential.

The organization also fosters a culture of inclusion by engaging with families and community members, promoting understanding and acceptance of individuals with disabilities. Their work goes beyond the town of Cary, as Gigi’s Playhouse has locations all over the United States.

Esteamed

Esteamed, a local downtown Cary coffee shop, has a strong commitment to inclusivity with the goal of lowering the more than 70% unemployment rate for adults with disabilities. They have over 15 employees with differing abilities. 

The restaurant actively hires individuals with disabilities, ensuring that its team reflects a rich diversity of talents and experiences. Esteamed strives to provide both their team and guests with a warm supportive environment. 

Moon Angel Sweets

Moon Angel Sweets is a chocolate company in Cary known for its confections and creative treats. What sets this bakery apart is its dedication to inclusivity both in its baking and its hiring practices.

The bakery actively recruits individuals with disabilities, ensuring that its workforce is as diverse as its menu. Moon Angel Sweets provides a supportive environment where every team member can thrive, contributing their unique talents to the bakery’s success. 

Founded in 2001, Moon Angel Sweets specializes in one-of-a-kind gift boxes with chocolates and Brazilian truffles. Moon Angel Sweets partners with Gigi’s Playhouse to create work opportunities for adults with Down Syndrome as well as partnering with rural communities of women in Northeastern Brazil by supporting their business’. Moon Angel Sweets supports the community by contributing 5% of web based sales to local non-profit organizations.

Howdy Homemade Ice Cream

Howdy Ice Cream is a non-profit ice cream shop located in Cary. This ice cream shop works towards fostering intentional inclusion in the workplace. 

The shop actively hires individuals with disabilities, providing them with meaningful employment opportunities and a supportive work environment. This commitment to inclusivity enriches the team and enhances the overall customer experience.

Howdy Homemade Ice Cream places a strong emphasis on creating an environment where everyone feels valued and where everyone has something special to offer. 

Town of Cary Recreation

The Town of Cary offers numerous programs and specialized recreation for people of all ages with disabilities. Cary is committed to offering programs that encourage individuals with and without disabilities to participate together. Specialized recreation includes art, dance, performing arts, culinary, fitness, nature, sports, outdoor recreation, and more! 

Gigi’s Playhouse, Esteamed, Moon Angel Sweets, and Howdy Ice Cream are just a few examples of how businesses in Downtown Cary have embraced inclusivity in meaningful ways. By actively hiring individuals with disabilities and fostering supportive environments, these establishments contribute to the community in immense ways.
